The primary role of the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) is to provide emergency medical care to life-threatening patients on the whole territory of the Republic of Croatia. HEMS enables qualified medical teams to promptly access critically ill or injured patients, diagnose and perform emergency medical procedures at the intervention, and treat them during emergency medical transport to the hospital.

Primary intervention

The HEMS team provides emergency medical care to patients directly at the site of the intervention immediately upon receiving the call and transports them to hospitals of the highest level of acute healthcare.

Secondary intervention

The HEMS team is directed to the agreed meeting point with the terrestrial EMS team, from where it transports the patient to further hospital treatment.

Interhospital medical transport intervention

Transportation of emergency patients between two hospitals according to specified criteria for interhospital transport.
